AVTE Monthly Community Discussions!

Welcome to the AVTE Monthly Community Discussions!

To encourage collaboration and resource sharing throughout the year, we'll be posting two discussion topics in the AVTE Exchange each month:

🩺 Veterinary Awareness Topic

Each month we'll highlight a veterinary awareness month or observance and invite members to discuss how they teach these important concepts and share related educational resources.

🎓 Teaching Toolbox

We'll also explore a topic related to veterinary technology education-from student engagement and assessment to simulation, externships, educational technology, and more.

Lead by AVTE member @Tara Novak, Director of the Veterinary Technology Program at Mount Wachusett Community College, we encourage everyone to:

  • Ask questions
  • Share experiences
  • Exchange ideas
  • Upload or link resources from the AVTE Resource Library http://avte.net/library
  • Recommend articles, videos, lesson plans, activities, and assessments that may benefit fellow educators

Whether you're a new educator or have decades of experience, we hope these monthly discussions become a place to learn from one another and strengthen our community.

We look forward to hearing your ideas!

🩺 August 2026 Discussion: National Immunization Awareness Month

Vaccination is one of the most effective tools in preventive veterinary medicine, making immunization education a cornerstone of veterinary technology programs.

How do you teach vaccine protocols, immunology, client communication, and preventive care? Do you use case studies, current guidelines, client scenarios, or other interactive teaching methods?

We'd love to hear from you!

  • How do you approach teaching immunization concepts?
  • What activities or assignments have been particularly effective?
  • Have you found any great articles, videos, or other educational resources?

Resource Sharing
If you have lesson plans, presentations, laboratory activities, client education materials, assessments, or links to resources in the AVTE Resource Library http://avte.net/library, please share them with the community!

🎓 August 2026 Teaching Toolbox: AI in Veterinary Technology Education

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing higher education, presenting both opportunities and challenges for educators. From lesson planning and content creation to student assignments and academic integrity, AI is becoming an increasingly important topic in the classroom.

How is your program approaching AI? Have you incorporated it into your teaching, developed policies for student use, or found ways to help students use AI responsibly?

Discussion Questions

  • Do you allow students to use AI for assignments? If so, under what guidelines?
  • Have you developed an AI policy for your courses or program?
  • What opportunities-or concerns-do you see for AI in veterinary technology education?

Resource Sharing
Please share AI policies, classroom activities, assignments, articles, webinars, or other resources that may help fellow educators navigate this evolving technology.
